Auditions
[info]montgomery76
I had my auditions this afternoon for "The Wedding Singer."  First of all, the other people who were trying out all seemed to be under the age of friggin' 20.  So.  I guess my Julia would be too old for the rest of the cast.  My guess is I'll get cast as Julia's mother or something equally depressing.

Auditions went okay.  I had written on my application that I would not play the part of Mr. T (who is part of the musical), which seemed to give the judges a chuckle.  My audition song went well, but they cut me off mid-way.  My monologue rocked.  Then they asked me to do a cold-read, which went okay.  It's unfortunate the passage they gave me was very blase.

Unfortunately, then a near-disaster struck.  We all had to go in and learn a dance routine as a group.  As we were leaving the stage to go wait in the hall to be summoned back to perform the dance, I slipped on the top step (I was wearing 2 1/2 inch heeled character shoes) and stumble-bumbled all the way to the bottom.  Never actually fell on my arse, but I might as well have!  As everyone gasped and "Oh!"'d around me, I making a grand, sweeping gesture and curtsied.  Everyone laughed, but I sure would have liked to been a little more innocuous than all that.

We were told we would hear back in a week.  Some people will get callbacks.  Some will get a "Thanks, but no."  Time will tell.............

EMail from an Author
[info]montgomery76
Back in November, I read and reviewed a book called Mistress of the Sun by Sandra Gulland.  She emailed me this week to thank me for the nice review and said she was going to quote it on her website.  This has happened a couple of times before (I always marvel that an author even finds my writings) but it is always very pleasing.  She said some very nice things to me; I also noticed she cc'd some editors on the email.  Always makes for a nice day when that sort of thing happens!

Anyway, if anyone is interested, here is the review:  http://readerreportblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/mistress-of-sun.html

It is a very fun book!

She Was Snippy

Well, in my opinion, the library lady was a tad snippy.  But she did take the charge off my account.  So.  I win!

Why Does This Give Me An Anxiety Attack?
[info]montgomery76
I have spent the last 36 hours worrying about something.  As I was showering this morning (when the mind is free to roam and worry about all the little things), I started to feel the signs of an anxiety attack: tightness and burning in my chest, pounding heart, difficulty breathing.  Anyway, what I am worrying about is a face-to-face confrontation I have to have this morning with an employee at the public library next to my house.  Sounds like the silliest thing to worry over, does it not?  I can perform for a thousand people but I can't have a face-to-face with someone who is wrongly accusing me of something.

Dave, Kira Ali and I returned a stack f books this last Saturday to the library.  In turn, we got some new books.  Being anal like I am, I checked my account online a few days later just to make sure everything looked in order.  It showed that one of the board books we had taken out for Ali, and then returned on Saturday, was still "out."  I called them and told them we had returned the book to the slot in the desk a few days earlier.  They said they would check the stacks and see if it just hadn't been checked in.  This has happened to us a couple of times before, and they always find the book there, so I wasn't worried about it.  Anyway, on Thursday night, I checked my account again to make sure it had been found and checked in.  My account came up as blocked though, and showed a $10 fine.  They were closed for the night, so I called them Friday morning.

The woman I spoke with on Friday told me their system said a book had been returned damaged.  That it was a board book called "Farmer Duck" and the cover had been torn off.  Lo and behold, this is the same book they hadn't checked in earlier.  I explained to her, calmly and rationally, that I would never return a book that way.  She replied, "Don't get mad at me!  You'll need to come in and talk to Karen personally tomorrow.  She's off today."  I told her I understood she had nothing to do with it and that I wasn't upset with her.  She also explained to me that for an amount of $10 or more, they send it to a collection agency.  WTF?  First of all, it's a small board book.  $7 to replace.  Second, if I had a damaged book, I would fess up, you know?  Good grief.

This just has me so freaked out and "honked off," as a friend of mine likes to say.  I fear the subject has had enough time to fester in my system that I will either go in there and start screaming or crying, and neither behavior will score any points!

Bragging Rights
[info]montgomery76
So, usually I wouldn't brag about this sort of thing, but I am oficially smaller than before I had kids, maybe even before I met Dave.  I have purchased three new pairs of pants in the last week, from different stores, and they are all size 4.  I'm in shock!  Go me!  And yea for my dance class!!

Where I Have Been and Where I Am Going
[info]montgomery76

So.  Hm.  Where do I start?

My Gene Kelly avatar-- I have become obsessed with two things: Gene Kelly and Celtic Thunder.  Two different things, same crazy obsessiveness.  I now own many Gene Kelly movies and love, love, love that man.  If he were alive today, I would probably stalk him.  No, really.  Celtic Thunder is alive today, and while I am not tempted to stalk them, I do want to make a trip to Ireland and Scotland someday soon.  Mostly for genealogical reasons (aka excuses), but also because I just think it is beautiful there, and I love corned beef and bread pudding.

So, some months ago, I was flipping through channels.  I came to PBS and there, on my screen, were five attractive men, all wearing long, black, shiny trenchcoats.  One guy sang and I realized he was a kid with a very mature voice.  (I later learned he was 14 at the time of the taping.)  Anyway, if anyone hasn't heard of these dudes, check them out.  Soon.  Heartland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB4wW1eHzdU  Raggle Taggle Gypsy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJyEO3xocb4&feature=related  Caledonia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0KZjmiL7xs&feature=related

And why, you are probably asking yourself, is Jen so crazy about getting us to listen to these guys?  Well!  I'm so glad you asked!  I am the Indiana State Street Crew Leader for Celtic Thunder!  Check out my street crew myspace: www.myspace.com/celticthunderindiana

What else am I doing?  As Sara knows, I have been working on my genealogy, and it looks as though she and I may be related very, very, very distantly.  I wish I had known this when I lived nearer to her though!  It would have been so much easier to compare our trees!  I have found out I am very British; of course, who isn't?  Lots of Scottish and lots of English.  And some Irish.

I was taking ballet classes for a long while; I took ballet for 12 years when I was younger.  My ballet teacher also teaches a "modern" class which she encouraged me to take when she found out I am going to audition for "Wedding Singer" The Musical this spring.  She is the choreographer for the show.  Since I decided to do this audition, I have also been taking weekly voice lessons from the vocal director of the show!!  Unfortunately, neither of these ladies have any say in the casting.  Both endeavors are going well.  I still need a headshot and resume, as well as a two-minute monologue.  My audition appointment is scheduled for the first weekend in May.

We have two poms now: Bruno and Bella.  Bella is a black girl who was a rescue.  She was saved from the Indy pound the day she was to be put down.  Daily, I marvel that a sweet, wonderful little dog was almost wasted.  Bruno is in training and is learning some great things.  We're choreogrpahing a dance routine for him to "The Worry Song" (Gene Kelly in "Anchors Aweigh") to take to some amateur competitions.

Kira is in pre-K five days a week.  She is so happy to be in school.  She is reading the level one and two readers, and can read 50% of the level three readers.  This next Wednesday is kindergarten registration.  And everytime I see something come home from her school about pre-K graduation, I get a nasty lump in my throat.  It's just pre-K, for crying out loud!  She had a wonderful 5th birthday party at home with a dozen of her friends.

Ali will be 2 in March.  She is a talker!  She is more into dolls and Barbies and coloring than Kira ever was.  We got her a keyboard for Christmas because she loves playing the piano so much, and has really amazing finger dexterity for such a little one.  She's going to be our artist!  Starting in September, she will go to preschool two mornings a week; this is the same school KIra has gone to for almost two years.

My sister's health continues to be the same.  She has the seizures, passes out for 20 minutes, then comes to.  It is always preceded by a headache and stress.  They had a corgi who got out in the street in their subdivision the weekend after Christmas and was hit by someone.  She died and the driver never stopped.  Pretty sad.  They had to know they hit something; she weighed about 35 lbs.

My online book review has taken a backseat to the other things going on in my life right now.  I spend up to five hours a day on the Celtic Thunder stuff alone.  Now that I have that pretty well organized, I hope to get back to the reading and writing.

Last week, Kira was diagnosed with pneumonia on Monday, as well as strep.  On Friday, Ali was diagnosed with strep.  On Saturday, Kira was diagnosed with an ear infection.  And on Sunday, our furnace died.  We had to call a repairman; of course, they charge triple time on Sundays.  This week has been a little better.

My scale was broken this morning.  It was working fine yesterday and today, it's just dead.  I changed the batteries-- nothing.  This drives me nuts because I have been doing really well lately and have lost a few more lbs.  However, I like to make sure I am on track every morning, and this morning, I was unable to do that.  Argh.  Once I drop Kira off at school this morning, Ali and I are going scale shopping.

Well, enough with all the boring and inane details of my life.  I'm back on LJ!
